21st November 2008: Civil society representatives meeting during the UNEP Regional Civil Society Consultation Meeting in Europe from 17th-18th November 2008 issued a statement outlining their support for a Rio+20 Earth Summit in 2012.

The statement read that a Summit in 2012 could offer the opportunity to address the growing crisis in environment, food and energy supply, poverty and sustainable development in general, in relation to the broader development and international finance agenda. The statement also pointed out the importance of a Summit in 2012 to raise the profile of sustainable development ahead of the negotiation of post-2015 Millennium Development Goals.
