The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), and the Government of Samoa have released the final agreed outcomes from the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) Pacific Subregional Preparatory Joint Ministerial Meeting.

Getulio Vargas Foundation Launches Debate Platform for Rio+20

The Getulio Vargas Foundation, through its Faculty of Law in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Program in Law and the Environment (PDMA), has launched a website on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The website seeks to provide a platform for discussion and debate on topics related to the UNCSD. The discussions will form the basis for recommendations to be presented during the UNCSD preparatory process.

“Japanese National Preparatory Committee for Rio +20" was launched and the first meeting was held on July 13, 2011. The committee consisting of 43 members was established to promote dialogue between stakeholders, in particular those from the 9 major groups mentioned in Agenda 21.

The Secretariat for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) has added a new option for submitting input to the compilation document that will lead to the draft Outcome Document. It is now possible to submit input online through the UNCSD website.

Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, nef (new economics foundation) and the New Economics Institute are working in partnership to develop the Global Transition 2012 initiative – an international coalition of organisations and leading thinkers from the global North and South with the aim of developing alternative solutions to redress inequalities and global environmental change.

UNEP Global Consultation on Rio+20, September 1, 2011
UNEP Regional Consultation Meeting for Europe, September 2, 2011
On September 1 and 2, 2011, UNEP will organize two consultations
1.UNEP Global consultation on Rio+20 on the theme “Engaging with Major Groups and Stakeholders on Rio+20: the Role of Civil Society in Shaping the Sustainable Development Agenda for the 21st century!”, September 1, 2011
2.UNEP Regional Consultation for Europe (RCM) in preparation for UNEP’s 12th Special Session of the Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum on September 2, 2011
These consultations are held before the UN DPI/NGO Conference, September 3-5, 2011 in Bonn (see: http://www.un.org/wcm/content/site/ngoconference/pid/16700).
The consultations will contribute to the preparations of UNEP’s Global Major Groups, Stakeholder Forum and the 12th Special Session of the Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum to be held from 20-22 February 2012, as well as to the Rio+20 Conference itself.
All interested Major Groups and Stakeholders are invited to participate in both events and in the UN-DPI Conference!

UK parliament launches new inquiry on preparations for Rio+20

The Environmental Audit Committee, chaired by Joan Walley MP, has launched an inquiry into the Rio+20 . The inquiry will examine the preparedness of the UK Government for Rio+20, along with the actions it should be taking to help make the Conference a success.

Purpose: The objective of this note is to provide guidance to Member States and other stakeholders in responding to the invitation from Second Preparatory Committee “to provide their inputs and contributions in writing by 1 November 2011 for inclusion in a compilation document to serve as basis for the preparation of zero draft of the outcome document”. The above request was transmitted by the Co-Chairs of the UNCSD Bureau in a letter dated 14 March 2011.

EC priorities for the Rio+20 conference labelled as problematic and vague - Eurostep

As a first step towards a joint EU strategy to be presented in November 2011, the European Commission (EC) unveiled its priorities for the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) that is to focus on the concept of green economy in the context of sustainability and poverty eradication and how to strengthen sustainable development. Civil society organisations and institutes have however declared the communication as both problematic and vague in content.
