P<\/a>olicy makers<\/z> must <\/z>rethink<\/z> economic<\/z> growth<\/z>, promote<\/z> social<\/z> equity<\/z> and<\/z> ensure<\/z> environmental<\/z> protection<\/z>, says<\/z> IUCN<\/z> (International<\/z> Union<\/z> for<\/z> Conservation<\/z> of<\/z> Nature<\/z>) at<\/z> the<\/z> United<\/z> Nations<\/z>Conference<\/z> on<\/z> Sustainable<\/z> Development<\/z> (UNCSD<\/z>). <\/z><\/p>\n

<\/z><\/z><\/p>\n

Among the<\/z> key<\/z> issues<\/z> are<\/z> the<\/z>green<\/z> economy<\/z> and<\/z> an<\/z> institutional<\/z> framework<\/z> in<\/z> the<\/z> context<\/z> of<\/z> sustainable<\/z>development<\/z> and<\/z> poverty<\/z> eradication<\/z>.<\/p>\n

“Nature<\/z> is<\/z> still<\/z> the<\/z> missing<\/z> link<\/z> in<\/z> Rio<\/z>+20 discussions<\/z>, yet<\/z> sustainable<\/z> development<\/z>cannot<\/z> be<\/z> achieved<\/z> without<\/z> it<\/z>,'” says<\/z> Julia<\/z> Marton-Lef<\/z>\u00e8vre<\/z>, IUCN<\/z> Director<\/z> General<\/z>. “Nature<\/z> can<\/z> and<\/z> does<\/z> provide<\/z> solutions<\/z> to<\/z> development<\/z> challenges<\/z> such<\/z> as<\/z> climate<\/z>change<\/z>, and<\/z> food<\/z>, water<\/z> and<\/z> energy<\/z> security<\/z>. It<\/z> is<\/z> time<\/z> governments<\/z> included<\/z> nature<\/z> in<\/z>development<\/z> strategies<\/z>.”<\/z><\/p>\n

IUCN<\/z> supports<\/z> socio<\/z> and<\/z> economic<\/z> development<\/z> that<\/z> places<\/z> nature<\/z> at<\/z> its<\/z> center<\/z> and<\/z>adopts<\/z> measures<\/z> that<\/z> ensure<\/z> justice<\/z>. This<\/z> includes<\/z> critical<\/z> issues<\/z> such<\/z> as<\/z> decent<\/z> jobs<\/z>,energy<\/z>, sustainable<\/z> development<\/z> as<\/z> the<\/z> answer<\/z> to<\/z> economic<\/z> and<\/z> financial<\/z> crises<\/z>, food<\/z>security<\/z>, water<\/z>, oceans<\/z>, and<\/z> disaster<\/z> readiness<\/z>. Social<\/z> equity<\/z> and<\/z> inclusiveness<\/z> are<\/z>overarching<\/z> principles<\/z> of<\/z> sustainable<\/z> development<\/z> strategies<\/z>, according<\/z> to<\/z> IUCN<\/z>.<\/z><\/p>\n

Rio<\/z>+20 is<\/z> an<\/z> important<\/z> opportunity<\/z> to<\/z> promote<\/z> investments<\/z> in<\/z> enhancing<\/z> the<\/z> natural<\/z>assets<\/z> on<\/z> which<\/z> poor<\/z> communities<\/z> depend<\/z>. For<\/z> example<\/z>, the<\/z> value<\/z> of<\/z> forests<\/z> and<\/z> the<\/z>direct<\/z> benefits<\/z> they<\/z> currently<\/z> provide<\/z> to<\/z> approximately<\/z> 1.6 billion<\/z> of<\/z> the<\/z> rural<\/z> poor<\/z> is<\/z>estimated<\/z> at<\/z> IUCN<\/z> at<\/z> US<\/z> $130 billion<\/z> per<\/z> year<\/z>. This<\/z> is<\/z> almost<\/z> the<\/z> same<\/z> amount<\/z> of<\/z>money<\/z> that<\/z> goes<\/z> into<\/z> Official<\/z> Development<\/z> Assistance<\/z> (ODA<\/z>).<\/z><\/p>\n

“Landscape<\/z> restoration<\/z> will<\/z> help<\/z> countries<\/z> meet<\/z> international<\/z> commitments<\/z> to<\/z> slow<\/z>, halt<\/z>and<\/z> reverse<\/z> forest<\/z> and<\/z> carbon<\/z> loss<\/z> and<\/z> to<\/z> restore<\/z> degraded<\/z> ecosystems<\/z>. By<\/z> focusing<\/z>on<\/z> both<\/z> forest<\/z> and<\/z> agricultural<\/z> lands<\/z> it<\/z> will<\/z> generate<\/z> income<\/z> worth<\/z> billions<\/z> of<\/z> dollars<\/z>each<\/z> year<\/z> to<\/z> national<\/z> and<\/z> local<\/z> economies<\/z> and<\/z> provide<\/z> food<\/z> security<\/z> to<\/z> millions<\/z> of<\/z>forest-dependent<\/z> people<\/z>,” says<\/z> Stewart<\/z> Maginnis<\/z>, Global<\/z> Director<\/z>, Nature<\/z> Based<\/z>Solutions<\/z> Group<\/z>. “This<\/z> should<\/z> include<\/z> concerted<\/z> efforts<\/z> to<\/z> invest<\/z> in<\/z> the<\/z> Bonn<\/z> Challenge<\/z>to<\/z> restore<\/z> 150 million<\/z> hectares<\/z> of<\/z> lost<\/z> forests<\/z> and<\/z> degraded<\/z> lands<\/z> by<\/z> 2020.”<\/z><\/p>\n

IUCN<\/z> urges<\/z> governments<\/z> to<\/z> do<\/z> more<\/z> in<\/z> terms<\/z> of<\/z> policy<\/z> and<\/z> institutional<\/z> coherence<\/z>.Understanding<\/z> the<\/z> interaction<\/z> between<\/z> nature<\/z> and<\/z> climate<\/z> change<\/z> will<\/z> generate<\/z>stronger<\/z> policies<\/z> and<\/z> commitments<\/z>.<\/z><\/p>\n

“Rio<\/z>+20 is<\/z> the<\/z> place<\/z> to<\/z> give<\/z> a<\/z> new<\/z> impetus<\/z> to<\/z> international<\/z> cooperation<\/z>,” says<\/z>Constanza<\/z> Martinez<\/z>, Senior<\/z> Policy<\/z> Officer<\/z>, Global<\/z> Policy<\/z> Unit<\/z>. “States<\/z>, civil<\/z> society<\/z>organizations<\/z> and<\/z> the<\/z> private<\/z> sector<\/z> are<\/z> well<\/z> aware<\/z> of<\/z> what<\/z> needs<\/z> to<\/z> be<\/z> done-there<\/z>must<\/z> be<\/z> a<\/z> commitment<\/z> to<\/z> working<\/z> together<\/z> towards<\/z> the<\/z> same<\/z> goal<\/z>: protecting<\/z> nature<\/z>so<\/z> it<\/z> can<\/z> protect<\/z> us<\/z>. We<\/z> must<\/z> move<\/z> towards<\/z> a<\/z> more<\/z> resilient<\/z> planet<\/z>.”<\/z><\/p>\n
