{"id":236,"date":"2010-08-31T16:12:27","date_gmt":"2010-08-31T16:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/2010\/08\/31\/assessing-progress-beta\/"},"modified":"2023-01-31T11:35:59","modified_gmt":"2023-01-31T11:35:59","slug":"assessing-progress-beta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/index.php\/assessing-progress-beta\/","title":{"rendered":"Assessing Progress towards internationally agreed commitments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking stock of achievements and identifying gaps in the implementation of outcomes of major summits is critical to enhancing global efforts towards sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Commitments<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Commitments that have defined a pathway for sustainability development include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/Documents.Multilingual\/Default.asp?DocumentID=97&#038;ArticleID=1503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stockholm Declaration<\/a> (1972), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/agenda21\/res_agenda21_00.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenda 21<\/a> (1992), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/documents\/ga\/conf151\/aconf15126-1annex1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio Declaration on Environment and Development<\/a> (1992), and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/sustdev\/documents\/WSSD_POI_PD\/English\/POIToc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johannesburg Plan Of Implementation<\/a> (2002). It is also worth consulting Stakeholder Forum&#8217;s retrospective <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthsummit2012.org\/index.php\/milestones-to-rio20\/225-sd-timeline\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">Timeline<\/a> of major events relating to global sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Targets<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Agenda 21 <\/strong>and the<strong> Johannesburg Plan of Implementation <\/strong>from the<strong> Rio Earth Summit 1992<\/strong> and the <strong>Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD)<\/strong> respectively, both outlined a<strong> timetable of targets <\/strong>as a means to secure a way of living for the current global population as well as for future generations, whilst preserving our ecosystems and resources. Stakeholder Forum has pulled these targets together into two documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/agenda21\/res_agenda21_00.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Agenda 21: Targets from the Rio Earth Summit 1992<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/sustdev\/documents\/WSSD_POI_PD\/English\/POIToc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JPOI: Targets from the World Summit on Sustainable Development<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>PrepCom 1<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the First Preparatory Committee meeting for Rio+20 (20th May 2010), known as Prepcom1, a level of consensus emerged amongst delegations that all countries and stakeholders need to enhance efforts and concrete actions to achieve sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stakeholder Forum has isolated the section of the Co-Chair&#8217;s Summary relating to<\/strong> &#8216;sustainable development progress and implementation gaps&#8217; as discussed at Prepcom1, which can be downloaded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stakeholderforum.org\/fileadmin\/files\/CoChairsSummary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stakeholder Forum has also conducted a broad analysis of the <strong><em>Outcomes from PrepCom 1<\/em><\/strong>, available for download <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stakeholderforum.org\/fileadmin\/files\/Analysis%20PrepCom1%20Outcomes%20FINAL.doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>, and available as a PowerPoint presentation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stakeholderforum.org\/fileadmin\/files\/Outcomes%20from%20PrepCom1%20July%202010.ppt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. PrepCom 1 was the first preparatory meeting for the Summit and took place from 17th \u2013 19th May 2010 at the UN in New York.
