The multiple benefits of  Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD )  were discussed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP17)  in Durban, South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cIn the same way that the Green Economy promotes sustainable, low  carbon and resource-efficient economic growth, REDD  also explicitly  addresses the need for a balance between income growth, jobs and social  equity,\u201d UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith just over six months until the UN Conference on Sustainable  Development (Rio 20) in Brazil, countries ranging from Indonesia to  Brazil and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are recognizing that  REDD  investments can offer myriad opportunities to boost green  development,&#8217; Steiner said. <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><\/p>\n<p>He said utilising the investments and enhancing ecosystem services,  tackling climate change, improving water security and promoting green  jobs is important. <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Mobilizing more partnerships such as that between Norway and  Indonesia, or private sector funding is vital if the full potential of  forests to contribute to a Green Economy is to be realized,\u201d Steiner  said. <\/span> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cA green economy transition is worth pursuing, not only because it  is the best way forward but also for what it does to bring millions of  people out of poverty, while conserving their ecosystems, improving  their lives and enhancing their livelihood opportunities,\u201d said Dr.  Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, Head of the Indonesian President\u2019s Delivery Unit  for Development Monitoring and Oversight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uncsd2012.org\/rio20\/index.php?page=view&amp;nr=638&amp;type=230&amp;menu=38\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\"><em>Original article published at www.uncsd2012.org<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>**NGOs and  other Major groups\u2019 organisations that are NOT yet accredited to the  United Nations and wish to participate in the United Nations Conference  on Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) will be offered a one  time opportunity to become accredited to Rio+20. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uncsd2012.org\/rio20\/index.php?menu=90\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here <\/a>to  start the accreditation for new groups.The deadline for new  accreditation is&nbsp;20 February&nbsp;2012.
