{"id":99,"date":"2009-05-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/2009\/05\/26\/brazil-undesa-response-2\/"},"modified":"2009-05-26T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-26T00:00:00","slug":"brazil-undesa-response-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/index.php\/brazil-undesa-response-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian government responds to call by UN Division for Sustainable Development to submit views for Secretary General\u2019s report on a possible Earth Summit in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>26<sup>th<\/sup> May 2009:<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>The Brazilian government\u00a0has submitted\u00a0a paper on the possibility of a high level event on sustainable development in 2012, as a contribution to the report of the Secretary General of the United Nations, as invited by the Division for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" \/>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The paper outlines a number of \u2018areas for action\u2019 for a high level event, drawing attention to the following themes as a priority focus:<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Review of Implementation:<\/strong> the event should seek to review progress towards Agenda 21, the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation and the three Rio Conventions: the <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/2860.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbd.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Convention on Biological Diversity<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unccd.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Convention to Combat Desertification<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International Governance for Sustainable Development:<\/strong> a conference in 2012 could offer the opportunity to debate the reform of the international institutional architecture dealing with environment and sustainable development, with a particular focus on the     <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/dsd\/csd\/csd_csd16.shtml?utm_source=OldRedirect&#038;utm_medium=redirect&#038;utm_content=dsd&#038;utm_campaign=OldRedirect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission on Sustainable Development<\/a> (CSD) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN Environment Programme<\/a> (UNEP)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Green Economy:<\/strong> an event in 2012 could provide the platform to consolidate thinking and debate on the \u2018evolving paradigm of the \u201cgreen economy\u201d, allowing for broad stakeholder engagement, including governments, civil society, and business. Further global discussion is required on how to stimulate the world economy to promote sustainable consumptiom and production and create new investment opportunities including those in \u2018energy, transport, agriculture and infrastructure\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water <\/strong>\u2013 the fourth recommended focus area is water, calling specifically for the conference to stimulate action by nation states to take national measures aiming at universalizing access to water and sanitation, in accordance with Chapter 18 of Agenda 21. It also calls on the international community to \u2018support those national efforts through cooperation, provision of financial resources \u2013 including new and additional financial resources \u2013 technology transfer and capacity-building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The paper concludes that \u2018The overall objective of the Conference will be to strengthen commitment to sustainable development.
