{"id":993,"date":"2012-03-28T15:27:13","date_gmt":"2012-03-28T15:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/2012\/03\/28\/hedegaard-phase-out-fossil-fuel-subsidies\/"},"modified":"2012-03-28T15:27:13","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T15:27:13","slug":"hedegaard-phase-out-fossil-fuel-subsidies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/earthsummit2012.stakeholderforum.org\/index.php\/hedegaard-phase-out-fossil-fuel-subsidies\/","title":{"rendered":"Hedegaard: Phase out fossil fuel subsidies at Rio+20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">EU  climate commissioner Connie Hedegaard has called on world leaders  heading to Rio+20 in June to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.Worldwide  fossil fuel subsidies were estimated by the IEA to be worth $409 billion  in 2010, with subsidies to oil products representing half that total.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">They  can encourage excessive energy consumption and lead to distortions in  the market, and an inefficient allocation of resources, particularly in  countries that import large quantities of fossil fuels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Speaking after a meeting with Brazilian ministers in Rio, Hedegaard, who is also&nbsp;leading  the EU\u2019s battle to enforce an emissions tax on airlines using European  airspace, said she hoped June\u2019s summit resulted in tangible goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cWe  must internationally get the pricing right. The way we measure GDP  today\u2026 we must take care that there is a price attached to harming the  common environment,\u201d Hedegaard said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cOne place to start would be to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Hedegaard  also backed the UN-led initiative to develop Sustsianble Development  Goals, based on the Millennium Development Goals set by 192 countries in  2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cIn  Europe we think it is very important to have the Sustainable  Development Goals. Or at least take a decision in Rio that we should  have these,\u201d Hedegaard said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">And she suggested that one of the goals at the Rio conference should be universal access to renewable energy in 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cIf the political will is there, we can do tangible things.
