Rio+20 Summit debated by MPs

Joan Walley, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent and Chair of the Environment Audit Select Committee, moved a debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 28 February on the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

Estimates debate

The debate on the funding of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs follows the publication of the estimates for the allocation of expenditure for Central government, including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, for the year ending 31 March 2013.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Richard Benyon, responded during the debate on behalf of the Government. Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Fiona O’Donnell, responded during the debate on behalf of the Opposition.

Rio+20 Summit

The Environmental Audit Committee held an inquiry into preparations for the Rio+20 United Nations conference on sustainable development and published its report on 26 October 2011. The Government Response to the Committee report was published on 16 January 2012. Further information can be found on the Environmental Audit Committee webpages.

Estimate days

All public spending has to be approved by Parliament. Estimates of spending are presented to parliament and three ‘estimates days’ are set aside each year to debate the content of those estimates presented. In practice, estimates days are often used for debating one or more estimates or select committee reports chosen by the Liaison Committee.
