German Federal Minister for the Environment’s Keynote Speech on IEG
Norbert Röttgen, German Federal Minister for the Environment, delivered a keynote speech on International Environmental Governance (IEG) at the UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum in Nairobi, on 23rd February 2011.
The speech emphasised the urgent need to move beyond ‘business as usual’ and ensure that development is no longer primarily based on resource consumption.
For this to be achieved, Röttgen called for ‘fundamental reform of the UN’s institutional structures’, insisting on the need for the United Nations Environment Organisation to acquire equivalent status to the likes of the World Health Organisation, if it is to successfully oversee the global transition to a green economy.
