Final Statement of NGOs on the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development at Prepcom 1

At prepcomm 1 on Rio+20 the NGO Major Group issued a statement on the institutional framework for sustainable development.

The statement highlights the ‘accountability crisis facing the international community‘, illustrated by the lack of action, due to the lack of a mandate, from bodies such as the CSD and UNEP in aiming to implement Agenda 21. It highlights the need for national accountability, which could lead to accountability at an international level.

Finally, it is critical of “the unfettered and unregulated impact of multinational corporations on the environment and communities” and once again calls for “an urgent agreement on an International Convention on Corporate Accountability“
