Report: Bringing the Ocean back into the Earth Summit
The Pew Environment Group produced a briefing paper ahead of the First Intersessional Meeting of UNCSD (Rio+20), in which it made key recommendations aimed to ensure that ocean related issues remain at the centre of the negotiations.
With coastal areas providing the location for the majority of human settlements, billions of people on earth are dependent on ocean ecosystems for both employment and as a source of food. A high priority for the achievement of sustainable development and poverty eradication, therefore, are realistic and comprehensive decisions and policies which ensure the protection of the marine environment.
