Ramsar Releases Outcomes of Pacific Islands Nature Conservation Roundtable
The Ramsar Convention Secretariat has released a summary of the 14th Meeting of the Pacific Islands Nature Conservation Roundtable, which was convened by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), under the theme of “Nature’s Role in the Green/Blue Economy,” to align with regional preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).
The Roundtable took place from 25-29 July 2011, in Suva, Fiji. According to the Ramsar Secretariat, the Roundtable produced a resolution document of messages for Rio+20, including calling for: sustainable development to be embedded into sectoral business plans; governments to ensure that any investments support green and equitable development; sustainability and biodiversity to be at the core, and not just a new mechanism for capitalism gains in a green economy; the UNCSD to deliver concrete actions to support the maintenance of natural capital of Pacific Island States; governments to ensure that any foreign or local investments support green principles such as sustainable and equitable development; and governments to provide incentives for good practices through green financing.
The Pacific Islands Roundtable for Nature Conservation is a membership-based network of NGOs, donors and regional organizations that works to increase effective conservation action in the Pacific Islands.
