UN sticks with climate agenda – but what prospects?

On January 31st, BBC News website environment correspondent, Richard Black, published an article entitled: ‘UN sticks with Climate Agenda – but what prospects?”, in which he explains that reports of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon retiring from the climate change agenda are somewhat misleading.

What is planned, rather, is a change in focus, with the Secretary General and his officials aiming to spend more time energy on preparations for Earth Summit 2012.

This is due to the realisation that a new global deal is still a long way off and unlikely to be achieved at the next UNFCCC summit in 2011, COP 17 in Durban, South Africa. Rio+20, however, is seen as the most realistic opportunity to make significant gains in the climate change and sustainable development agendas.
