Earth Summit 2012 Forum hosted by NRDC, United Nations Foundations and Worldwatch Institute Upcoming event

The Natural Resources Defense Council, the Worldwatch Institute and the United Nations Foundation are hosting this forum in Washington D.C for key UN, governmental and non-governmental representatives to discuss prospects for the “Rio+20” Summit, with a particular focus on one of the conference’s major themes – the green economy. The forum will be an opportunity to help shape what could be a turning point in addressing progress on the critical sustainability challenges we face.

OECD meeting on Green Growth strategy

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) hosted the Annual Meeting of Sustainable Development Experts, (AMSDE), to review their draft Green Growth Strategy. Previously, at 2009 AMSDE, Delegates agreed that they would make a contribution to the OECD Green Growth Strategy by conducting a sustainability impact assessment (SIA) of the Strategy (planned for release in mid-2011) as part of an organisation wide contribution.

European Regional Consultation Meeting

The European Regional Consultation Meeting was held on 27 October 2010 in Geneva, Switzerland, in the preparation for the 12th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF) and 26th Session of the UNEP Governing Council/ Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC-26/GMEF).

UNDESA-DSD announces CSD Intersessional date and venue   

The Commission on Sustainable Development Intersessional on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) is to be held 13-14 January, 2011, in Panama City, Panama, the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs-Division for Sustainable Development has announced. The Intersessional will provide a non-negotiating space for Member States, Major Groups, and UN Agencies to discuss; potential programs to be included in the 10-Year Framework of Programs on SCP (10YFP) to support regional and national initiatives; the structure the 10YFP could take; and the possible visions and objectives it could serve.

Stakeholder Forum Input to Consultative Group on Environmental Governance

Stakeholder Forum has produced a document to input to the Consultative Group on Environmental Governance. The UNEP Consulative Group of high level representatives and ministers will hold its second meeting in Helsinki, Finland from 21st – 23rd November 2010.

The 2nd UNITAR-Yale Conference on Environmental Governance and Democracy, in which Stakeholder Forum participated, was held on 17-19 September 2010 in New Heaven, Connecticut.

frogA new book on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Insecurity

Stakeholder Forum and the UN Convention on Biological Diversity are proud to announce the upcoming release of a new book, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Insecurity: A Planet in Peril, edited by Ahmed Djoghlaf and Felix Dodds. This wide-ranging book brings together leading thinkers from academia, government and civil society to examine and address the global challenges arising from biodiversity and ecosystem insecurity. The book offers a comprehensive international assessment of the challenges and solutions for tackling biodiversity insecurity; something we must act on if we are to work towards a sustainable future.

With its publication date set for April 2011, advance orders can be placed with Earthscan from November.

Scottish stakeholders respond to the Secretary General’s Questionnaire on the Green Economy

Stakeholder Forum in partnership with the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum (SSDF), a division of the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) Scotland, hosted multi-stakeholder dialogues to identify and discuss key issues elements of a green economy. The dialogues addressed the Secretary General’s Questionnaire on the thematic area a green economy, and Stakeholder Forum compiled these responses into a multi-stakeholder submission to feed into the Earth Summit 2012 preparatory process.

UK Stakeholder respond to Secretary General’s Questionnaire

In response to the Secretary-General’s Questionnaire for Major Groups Stakeholder Forum has collated a UK multi-stakeholder submission. These responses will inform the Secretary General’s country reports for the Summit and shape the Summit agenda in the preparatory process.

Business and Industry: Major Groups and Stakeholders Consultation on Green Economy

A series of consultations with Major Groups and stakeholders was held by the MGSB, Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch (MGSB) from 25th to 26th October 2010. The expected outcome of the consultation is to get policy recommendations from major groups and stakeholders on the potential for a Green Economy to address global development and environmental challenges.

United Nations General Assembly Event: “Advancing Sustainable Development: What should Rio+20 Achieve?”

At the 65th Session of the General Assembly a Second Committee special event was held on 29 October 2010, “Advancing Sustainable Development: What Should Rio+20 Achieve?” One year on since the UN Member States decided at the 64th session of the General Assembly to organize the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), the event emphasised the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement of Major Groups in the preparations for Rio+20, as a means to maximizing the likelihood of successful outcomes.
