Getulio Vargas Foundation Launches Debate Platform for Rio+20

The Getulio Vargas Foundation, through its Faculty of Law in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Program in Law and the Environment (PDMA), has launched a website on the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20). The website seeks to provide a platform for discussion and debate on topics related to the UNCSD. The discussions will form the basis for recommendations to be presented during the UNCSD preparatory process.

The areas for debate were selected by a discussion and online voting process, and are: green economy; sustainable development governance and institutional framework; new environmental conventions; eradication of poverty; and sustainability at the local level. Postings to the site must focus on one of three aspects: the Brazilian perspective, the international perspective, or mechanisms for increased effectiveness.

Discussion is open from 10-28 August 2011. Debate will be conducted in both Portuguese and English, with a focus on why and how a topic should be dealt with on the national and international levels, and what mechanisms could lead to greater effectiveness in a certain area. The recommendations made during the debate phase will form the basis for the drafting of recommendations to be made at the end of the process. The recommendations will be issued to the Government of Brazil, on themes of particular interest for Brazil, and to the Secretariat of the UNCSD by the 1 November 2011 deadline for submissions to the UNCSD compilation paper.
