Stakeholder Forum Releases Summary Reports from Towards Bonn2011 Nexus Conference Workshops at Rio+20 Regional Preparatory Meetings
Stakeholder Forum has released two synthesis documents from workshops entitled ‘Towards Bonn2011 Conference: The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus – Solutions for the Green Economy’ which took place during the recent UNCSD Regional Preparatory Meetings for Africa and Asia-Pacific regions. The workshops represented an opportunity for civil society organizations from these regions to directly input to the debate around water, energy and food security.
The first workshop took place on 19th October at the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the continent’s preparatory meeting for Rio+20. The second workshop occurred on the following day, October 20th, at the Asia-Pacific equivalent event in the Lotte Hotel, Seoul, South Korea.
In the first part of the workshops, panellists introduced the components of the nexus approach and highlighted the importance of addressing water, energy and food security holistically. Speakers then emphasised the problems involved with treating each resource individually, stressing that an integrated approach will be necessary if conflicts are to be avoided and trade-offs minimised. They also provided an overview of the current work around the three securities, and the key incentives needed to facilitate coherent policies and governance.
The second part of the workshops saw participants divided into groups to discuss the main issues and challenges surrounding the implementation of nexus-oriented policies – especially those from a regional perspective. This was followed by each group presenting their key policy recommendations to the floor.
