UNEP Governing Council addresses key themes for Earth Summit 2012

The forthcoming UNEP Governing Council in Bali on 24th – 26th February will focus on many of the issues to be addressed by a Rio+20 Earth Summit in 2012

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on 24th December 2009 agreeing to host a high level event on sustainable development in 2012, to focus on ‘a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication and the institutional framework for sustainable development.’

The overarching theme for the 11th UNEP Governing Council in Bali is ‘Environment in the Multilateral System’, with a specific focus on International Environmental Governance and Sustainable Development; the Green Economy and Biodiversity and Ecosystems. A number of background papers on these issues have been produced for the Ministerial Consultations that will take place during the Governing Council.
