Information Note: Success at Rio+20?
The World Resources Institute and The Access Initiative have produced an Information note on Rio+20 entitled “Success at Rio+20? The case for regional conventions on environmental access rights”.
The note emphasises the importance of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration, signed at the first Earth Summit in 1992, in which broad governmental consensus was achieved on the significance of access rights (the rights to access information, participate in decision making and the access to justice) in addressing environmental issues fairly and effectively.
It continues by examining the progress made in the implementation of Principle 10, which is vital for increased transparency in information sharing and decision making as a valuable means of empowerment for stakeholder groups in the developing world, especially on issues such as the environment and the use of revenues allocated for local economic development.
